How to Calculate Flooring
Measure the room length and width, multiply to get the floor area, then add a waste percentage for cuts, patterns, and damaged pieces.
Formula: Total = (Length × Width) × (1 + Waste%)

- For straight-lay patterns, add 5–10%. For diagonal or herringbone patterns, add 10–15%. For rooms with many angles or obstacles, add up to 15–20%.
- How do I calculate flooring for an irregular room?
- Break the room into rectangular sections, calculate each area separately, then add them together. Apply the waste percentage to the total.
- Do I need to account for waste with click-lock flooring?
- Yes. Even with click-lock or floating floors, you will have cuts at walls and around obstacles. A 10% waste allowance is standard.
