What Is Architectural Scale?

Architectural scale is the ratio between a measurement on a drawing and the corresponding real-world measurement. A scale of 1:50 means everything on the drawing is 50 times smaller than in reality.

How the Conversion Works

To convert from drawing to real-world: multiply the drawing measurement by the scale factor. For example, 3 cm on a 1:50 drawing = 3 × 50 = 150 cm = 1.5 m.

To convert from real-world to drawing: divide the real measurement by the scale factor. For example, 6 m at 1:100 = 600 cm ÷ 100 = 6 cm on the drawing.

Example

You measure 4.2 cm on a 1:50 floor plan. The real-world length is 4.2 × 50 = 210 cm = 2.1 m.
